 The
Cathedral saint - Cécile
of Albi represents a masterpiece of the Southern
Gothic. The total construction lasted two centuries from 1282 till 1480. It
is about a real cathedral - fortress which became a dissuasive weapon in the
defensive system of the city. In the exterieur, the building grew rich of
the door Dominique de Florence, (verse 1392), of a bell tower - donjon 78
metres high ended in 1492, after the consecration of the cathedral (1480),
and the canopy of the front door (1515-1540). The inside of the monument
marks a break with the massive aspect from the outside. One thinks generally
that it is Flemish, unknown artists, that realized the gigantic mural of the
Last Judgment (1475-1480 ). At the same moment, French artists sculpture in
blazing Gothic the rood screen and the fence(close) of the choir
(1475-1484). This stony set(group) is decorated with a magnificent
polychromatic statuary, unique(only) testimony by its importance and its
quality of the French sculpture of the XV-th century. The frescoes of the
vault form the vastest whole Italian painting of the Renaissance (97 metres
long on 28 metres wide) and the most former(ancient) of France (1509-1512 ).

Notre Dame
De eerste steen van de huidige kathedraal werd in 1277 door de bisschop
Raymond van Calmont gelegd. De honderjarige oorlog, vervolgens
de epidemieën en met name de zwarte pest van 1348 alsmede
verschillende twisten binnen het bisdom veroorzaakten een lange onderbreking van dit
monumentale bouwwerk. Aan het einde van de XIVde eeuw, werd een zuiver
gefortificeerde klokketoren gebouwd, bekroond met een spits van hout. Tegen
de XVde eeuw, werden de bouwwerkzaamheden fraaier met de voltooiing van het
middenschip en zijn gewelf, waarna de bouw van de dwarsbeuk en
de eerste traveeën hervat werden.
